As of April 2, 2023 (and probably somewhat earlier), UniFi now considers a UNVR on a locally routed subnet to be a direct connection. This post is now deprecated.

Most of us are using VLANs, a feature made especially easy to manage with UniFi, to separate our UniFi Protect networks. It’s incredibly frustrating to me that my mobile device cannot make a local connection to my Protect controller when it is on a separate VLAN.

I want to avoid using UniFi cloud features altogether. Unfortunatley I have this local connection problem that UniFi gives me no way to solve, as well as a desire to avoid their cloud services using what should be easily configurable settings.

As of now I know of no workaround.

An acceptable resolution would be for those of us who have a way to provide a direct connection to our Protect controller either on a locally routed subnet or over the Internet to have a place to configure that so the UniFi cloud is never involved. It would make a huge difference for the performance of my user’s mobile devices.
